His secretary writes back to Mr. Markham to acknowledge his invitation. He informs him that he leaving for Chicago and will not be back for several weeks. So he is unable to accept his invitation.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899).
